PREGNANCY AND BREAST CANCER

If you are of childbearing age and you are likely to have breast cancer, please consider my comments below:

  • Chemotherapy has a very significant impact on fertility, ovulation, oocyte quality. If you want to get pregnant, and if there is a possibility of chemotherapy, please contact your breast surgeon and your reproductive health professional first. I strongly recommend freezing the oocyte/embryo before planned chemotherapy. Because when breast cancer treatments are completed, the chances of pregnancy are quite high.
  • If you’ve had breast cancer treatment in the past and you’re pregnant, this usually has no adverse effect on the course of cancer. So, don’t be in a hurry to terminate your pregnancy.
  • If you a very high-risk person for breast cancer and you’re planning pregnancy, I’d recommend pre-pregnancy proflactic mastectomy particularly at 3rd decade. There may be no breastfeeding, but it is much more important to protect against cancer.
  • Last word: Women right to have pregnancy. If you have been treated, discuss your chances of pregnancy with a related physician group including your breast surgeon, medical oncologist and gynecologist.
