USING SILICON PROSTHESIS TO CREATE A NEW BREAST AFTER MASTECTOMY
Particularly since Angelina Jolie had this procedure, this kind of surgery has become incredibly popular worldwide.
The technical names of this procedure are “Immediate breast reconstruction with silicon implant plus NSM (nipple sparing mastectomy)”, Skin-sparing mastectomy (SSM- removal of the breasts without nipple-areola complex).
NSM is a well-recognized strategy for providing efficient prevention when there is an extremely high chance of breast cancer.
This is not an only cosmetic procedure for things like breast reduction or enlargement. To put it more accurately, it’s a major surgical operation that needs to be justified in advance.
The indications for NSM and SSM are:
- Woman with a high risk of breast cancer, like Angelina Jolie (further information about this high risk area on our site). Breast-cancer-related mutation carriers
- Breast cancers with multiple foci or multiple pre-cancerous lesions
- Widespread microcalcifications in the breasts.
- Precancerous histopathological conditions after repeated breast biopsies.
- Good chemoterapy response and patients who wants to NSM or SSM
It is an excellent surgical treatment option for breast cancer, particularly in patients under 50 years of age, in cases where both breasts have lesions or tumors, in cases of multi-focused breast cancer (more than one focus in 25% of cases), or in cases where the patient’s goal is to remove the cancer while also improving the appearance of their breasts. Furthermore, it removes commonly the necessity for radiation therapy in Stage 1 disease.
The goal of this procedure is protect nipple-areola complex and skin overlying breast but remove whole breast tissue as much as, and then to replace that tissue with a silicone prosthesis that is either supra- or submuscular, forming a new breast (see photos). Removing of non-tumor bearing breast provides optimal symmetry and considerably lowers the risk of cancer.
I personally prefer prepectoral light silicone prosthesis in the aspects of more tolerable postoperative period, quite low postoperative pain and potentially better cosmetic results.
IN SOME SITUATIONS, A SILICONE PROSTHESIS COMBINED WITH NIPPLE SPARING MASTECTOMY IS THE BEST SOLUTION.
